Police constable killed, 20 injured in Srinagar blasts

Srinagar, May 30 (UNI) A constable of Jammu and Kashmir police was killed and 20 people were wounded in separate blasts, while security forces averted major tragedies in the Kashmir valley today.

Official sources said militants tonight hurled a hand grenade towards security forces at Sopore in Baramulla district. However, the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the road side causing injuries to 14 persons. The injured were hospitalised.

Sources said security forces today averted a major tragedy when they detected an Improvised Explosive Device in the washroom of a mosque at Karn Nagar.

The bomb disposal squad was immediately summoned and the IED was defused.

Security forces also detected and defused an IED at Nutnusa.

Official sources said an explosion took place in a music shop at Batmaloo this afternoon, injuring three persons.

The injured were hospitalised, sources said adding it was believed that a grenade lobbed from outside caused the blast.

In the other incident, militants hurled a hand grenade towards a police vehicle at busy Naaz crossing.

The grenade exploded near the petrol tank of the vehicle.

Two police constables and two civilians were injured in the blast, the sources said, adding one of the injured constable, Ghulam Nabi, later succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

Four tourists from Gujarat were killed and six others injured in a similar grenade blast at Batpora on May 25 evening.
