Customs haul ganja worth Rs 8.5 lakhs

Aizawl, May 30 (UNI) Mizoram's Customs officials here today seized about 338.5 kgs of contraband ganja during frisking a van from Manipur near Seling checkgate, about 40-km from here.

Customs officials said the ganja, contained in 92 packets, was worth Rs 8.5 lakh.

During frisking, the driver and the handy man both from Manipur fled the scene.

However, with the help of Seling NGO volunteers, the driver was caught later while his handyman managed to escape.

The vehicle was coming from Manipur. Fake registration plates of Assam and West Bengal were also found in the car.

The driver confessed that the goods were for Kolkata bound via Mizoram and Assam.

The ganja was of highest grade which costs about Rs 2,500 per kilo.
