Dowry case: SC stays NBWs against NRI

New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) The Supreme Court today stayed till further orders the non-bailable warrants issued by a local court in Punjab against a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Jagraj Singh facing allegations for harassment for dowry.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar Singh Panta also issued notice to the respondent wife Birpal Kaur.

The petitioner husband, a resident of Italy, had contended that he had born the entire expenses of her studies in Russia from where she did her MBBS.

The allegations of the wife are that he deserted her as she and her family failed to meet his demand of Rs. one lakh as dowry.

The counsel for the petitioner has pleaded that the allegations are baseless and that his client was being subjected to cruelty by his wife who wanted to get rid of matrimonial relationship.
