Details of persons provided with security summoned

Allahabad, May 29 (UNI) In a significant development, Allahabad High Court today summoned a report from the Uttar Pradesh government containing details of persons provided with security in the last one year.

A bench comprising Justices I Murtaza and Amar Saran passed the order on a writ petition of G Hasan.

The Uttar Pradesh principal secretary (home) has been directed to give reasons for security given in each case and whether any payment had been taken for providing security as per government orders.

The court has also asked for the report about periodical reviews of the need for security and the basis for providing additional security.

The number of persons involved in criminal cases and provided with security and the shortfall in number of policemen required for manning police stations and other duties may also be indicated, directed the judges.

The reply shall also mention the steps to be taken for reduction of provision of unnecessary security.

The court has directed the district level committee or the SSP/SP to mention reasons in their orders for providing security so that the court may be in a position to evaluate as to whether provisions of security in a particular case was justified.

Meanwhile, the HC office has been directed to communicate the order to the principal secretary (home) within a week.

The court will hear this case on July 12, 2006.
