Barge gets stuck in sand

Panaji, May 29 (UNI) A barge, carrying iron ore to Mormugao port, drifted into the sand and got stuck around 300 metres from Miramar Beach here this evening following heavy rains and gusty winds.

The eight-member crew is, however, safe and has established contact with the Captain of Port and the river navigation authorities.

Fire service vehicles were kept in readiness for rescue operations, according to police.

The rescue could not be undertaken as the sea was rough with rains lashing the state. The crew also could not move to the land because of bad weather, police said.
