Heavy rainfall in Tripura

Agartala, May 28 (UNI) Several low lying areas in the capital town and West Tripura district were inundated following heavy rainfall since Friday evening.

Official sources said all the major rivers like the Gomti, Feni, Howrah and the Rangapania were in spate following the incessant rainfall. Agartala-Sabroom portion of the national highway was inundated at three points in Bishalgarh area of the West District.

The sources said the affected people from the low lying areas had been shifted to higher places and dry food was distributed among the victims. Boats were also pressed into service at some places in Bishalgarh area to shift the people to safer places.

Local MET office predicted heavy rainfall at many places in Tripura during the next 48 hours.

It said Agartala had recorded a rainfall 165.9mm in the past 48 hours. Sonamura area of West Tripura alone has experienced a record rainfall of 153mm yesterday. Sabroom in South Tripura had rainfall of 100mm yesterday.
