Govt forms Oversight Committee for implementing quota policy
New Delhi, May 28 (UNI) The government tonight announced the setting up of an Oversight Committee headed by Administrative Reforms Commission chairman Veerappa Moily to oversee the implementation of the proposed 27 per cent quota for OBCs in higher education.
Minister of State without portfolio Oscar Fernandes speaking to reporters after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his 7, Race Course residence, said the Committee would have sub-committees for each stream of higher education.
Mr Fernandes along with Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister T K A Nair and Union Health Secretary P K Hota held hour-long consultations with Dr Singh about the outcome of their meeting with the striking medicos held earlier in the day.
Mr Fernandes said he would now meet representatives of the striking doctors and students and convey his message to them.
On May 26, after the the Prime Minister held his first meeting with the striking doctors he had assured them that the UPA Coordination Committee's reservation roadmap had addressed concerns of all the sections of students and they need not worry about shrinking educational opportunities.
Dr Singh said he foresaw a massive expansion in capacities of higher education system.
He had said the technical experts groups being set up under the Oversight Committee would examine ways and means of expanding the capacities and the committee itself would draw up a time bound roadmap for implementing the decisions and submit a comprehensive report by the end of August this year.
