CM to launch Iodized Salt drive

Hyderabad, May 28 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy will launch 'Adequate Iodine Intake Drive' with an aim to guard the people against Iodine deficiency, here tomorrow.

According to a release, large number of people, particularly children and women, are suffering from Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) and hence the urgency to make iodized salt in the state.

It is estimated that 200 million people in India are exposed to the risk of iodine deficiency while 70 million suffered from Goiter, the release said.

The Department of Health&Family Welfare would implement the laws of food fortification and adulteration and would monitor salt iodization.

The Department of Consumer Affairs, Food and Civil Supplies would be responsible for the availability of iodized salt at subsidized prices, and the Department of Industry would supervise manufacture, the release added.

The release further stated that the State Task Force under the Chairmanship of Commissioner of Food and Civil Supplies will monitor the progress periodically and the Steering Committee under the Chief Minister will review the progress half yearly.i UNI ASJ JJ 1712
