Bengal poll results a fitting reply to EC : Basu
Kolkata, May 28 (UNI) Lambasting the Election Commission for the manner in which it held in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, veteran CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu today said the party would take up the issue with the UPA government at the centre.
''Our party leaders will take up the issue with the government.
The EC insulted the people of West Bengal and the State government by ordering a five-phase polling in the state. It is condemnable,'' he said while speaking at a victory rally to mark the seventh successive electoral win of the ruling Left Front.
He said the election results had given the EC a fitting reply.
The nonagenarian leader said elections in the state had always been peaceful and never before had any Commission made any adverse remark. ''Even Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee had acknowledged in 2001 that that elections were peaceful and was sure about her party's victory,'' he said.
