US favours Japan for UN Security Council seat
Washington, May 27: The United States, at this point, supports only one country, Japan, for a seat in the United Nations Security Council .
''Even though we support expansion of the Security Council by two or so seats, Japan being one of those seats'', the top priority of the US is to reform the world body, says State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack.
He was replying to a question on British Prime Minister Tony Blair's suggestion that India should have a UN seat as a permanent member of the Security Council.
''At this point, we are working on all aspects, all aspects of UN reform. Management reform - we've run into some trouble on that, I think as you can see in the newspapers. And on Security Council reform it is really at the point of discussion among various states, various states floating various different proposals. At this point, the only country for which we have come out in favor of a Security Council seat is Japan and there's no change in that,'' McCormack said.
