Rishi relives Rajiv Goswami

New Delhi, May 27 (UNI) The tragic memories of 1990 came back alive today when Rishi Gupta did exactly what Rajiv Goswami had done nearly 16 years ago--self immolation attempt--and for the same cause.

Twenty-three year old Rishi Gupta attempted to immolate himself at the Ramlila Grounds here during an anti-quota 'Maha Rally'.

Hailing from Bihar, an ex-B Com student of DU, Rishi was running a shop in Shahdara area of East Delhi.

Nearly 16 years ago in 1990, Rajiv Goswami made headlines when he attempted self immolation at Deshbandhu College, when anti-Mandal agitations against the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations by the then V P Singh government, were at their peak.

Though, Rajiv survived then, his action sparked a series of self-immolations by college students and led to a formidable movement against reservation.

He died in February 2004 due to severe health complications which resulted out of his burn injuries.
