Doctor attempts self immolation

Cuttack, May 27 (UNI) Dr Surendra Mohanty, a post graduate student in the SCB Medical College and Hospital here made an abortive attempt to immolate himself inside the hospital campus today.

He was, however, rescued by the medical students who immediately admitted him to the hospital. It was not immediately known as to why the doctor took such an extreme step.

Dr Mohanty's wife was also a Post Graduate Student in the same Medical College.

Sources said the doctor had consumed poison inside the hostel this morning. However, in the afternoon, he suddenly tried to pour kerosene on his body in the presence of other doctors who overpowered him and seized the kerosene and match box.

Hospital sources clarified that the self immolation bid of the doctor had no link with the ongoing agitation of the striking junior doctors and the medical students against the reservation for the OBC in the higher educational institutions.

Doctors at SCB Medical College are tight-lipped over the reason behind the self immolation bid of Dr.Mohanty who has been admitted to the ICU of the Hospital.
