Two doctors arrested for accepting bribe from patient

Bhubaneswar, May 25 (UNI) Two surgery specialist of Capital Hospital here were arrested today by the Vigilance sleuths while accepting bribe for conducting a surgery on a woman patient.

Official sources said Dr P C Panda and Dr B C Kar both from the Surgery, were caught red-handed for accepting bribe money of Rs 3,000 after an operation in the hospital.

A woman patient from Jajpur had come to the Capital Hospital with pain on her appendicitis following indefinite cease work agitation by the Junior Doctors of the S C B Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack.

The Doctors at the Capital Hospital, sources said directed her to be admitted in a private nursing home for the operation but later they changed the venue as the patient expressed her inability to pay high fees at the private nursing home.

The two surgeons then decided to conduct the operation at the Capital Hospital and settled the fees at Rs.4000.They took Rs.1000 as advance prior to the surgery.

The relatives of the patient brought the matter to the knowledge of their local Parliament Member who in turn informed the Vigilance Department to take up the issue.

Accordingly the vigilance sleuths in plain cloth dress laid a tarp and caught the doctor while accepting the bribe money after the operation was over.The money was later recovered from their possession.Cases had been registered against the doctor under the Prevention of Corruption Act,vigilance sources said.
