Students bid for world record in Thavil playing
Pondicherry, May 26 (UNI) In a bid to set a new world record and break their own record, six third year students of Bharathiyar Palkalaikoodam today began a 35 hour non-stop Thavil concert at Gandhi Thidal here.
Palkalaikoodam member secretary Kannan inaugurated the performance this morning and it would come to a close at 1900 hours tomorrow, when Chief Minister N Rangasamy would greet the players.
The students - Murugayyan, Vijayan, Bhaskaran, Pasupathy, Tamizhvanan and Suresh - performed a 12 hour non-stop Thavil concert in 12 different 'thalams' in April last year. They told newspersons that in order to break their earlier record they started the 35 hour non-stop concert in which 35 'thalams' would be played.
There would be solo and chorus playing of the musical instrument, they added.
