Striker Vucinic may miss World Cup

BELGRADE, May 25: Serbia and Montenegro striker Mirko Vucinic may miss the World Cup finals in Germany with a knee injury, the B92 media wesbite reported today.

Vucinic, one of two Montenegrin players in the team's World Cup squad, damaged his knee ligaments in the under-21 side's opening match against Germany at the European Championship in Portugal on Tuesday.

Team doctors said Vucinic will definitely miss the other two group matches at the under-21 tournament and that he may not recover in time for the June 9-July 9 World Cup.

Serbia and Montenegro will play as a unified team in Germany although Montenegro voted independence from the state union with Serbia on Sunday.

The two soccer federations have said they will split after the World Cup following FIFA instructions to compete as a unified team in the tournament where Serbia and Montenegro are in the same group as Argentina, the Ivory Coast and the Netherlands.
