Steel bar supplier penalized for duping customer

Itanagar, May 26 : In an eye-opening and consumer friendly verdict, a prominent city steel products firm was severely penalized for duping a customer by providing inferior quality steel bars.

Taking serious note, the Papum Pare District Consumer Redressal Forum (DCRF) has directed M/s Satyam Ispat, Banderdewa to cough out heavy compensation to the complainant Takam Titus for supplying inferior quality HSD bars.

Disposing off the case between the two parties on May 22 last under section (2) of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, the DCRF directed payment of compensation of over Rs 13.8 lakh with 13.25 per cent interest from the date of registration of the case. Besides, it has to pay Rs 20,000 to the complainant and damages of Rs three lakh for halting the progress of work for three months. The decree amount shall be paid within a month from the date of order, it said.

Holding the steel rod supplier responsible for dismantling of a multi-storied RCC hotel building constructed up to first floor, the forum had constituted a technical expert committee comprising executive member Taba Tadir, urban development deputy director A N Rai and senior architect Techi Gobin to verify the quality of steel rods and also assess the loss and convey its findings to the DCRF.

The steel bar suppliers in the Capital complex sell various brands of steel rods manufactured in Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.

These products are also referred as local products.
