Over two lakh trees felled in Srinagar's Dal Lake

Srinagar, May 26 : The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has lauded the State Forest Corporation (SFC) for its efforts to clean up the world famous Dal Lake by felling more than two lakh trees.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Bashir Ahmed Khan and Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir, appreciated the efforts of the SFC for felling 2,47, 342 trees in Dal and Nigeen lakes within a short period of time.

It also directed the authorities that the roots of trees be removed as well.

This is being done to control pollution and check encroachment in the Dal Lake area.

The court ordered the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) to submit within 40 days a list of illegal structures from Gagribal to Nishat on the banks of the Dal Lake.

It also asked LAWDA to submit a list of illegal structures which have been demolished so far and would be in the near future.
