Life returns to normal in JK after 2 days strike

Srinagar, May 26: Life returned to normal in the Kashmir valley after two-days curfew like situation due to unprecedented security arrangements and general strike against the Round Table conference on Kashmir chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here.

Shops and business establishments reopened this morning after 48-hour shutdown in response to a two-day bandh call given by breakaway Hurriyat Conference against the Round Table Conference.

Traffic on all routes was plying as usual and work in government offices and educational institutions was normal.

Sharp shooters and other security force personnel deployed in and around the Sher-e-kashmir International Convention Complex, which was the venue for the conference, were withdrawan last night after the departure of Prime Minister.

The main Boulvard road on the bank of the Dal Lake, which was closed for all types of traffic on Monday also reopened this morning, much to the delight of hundreds of tourists staying in the house boats and other hotels in the area.

The two day general strike also witnessed more than a dozen grenade attacks by militants resulting in death of six tourists from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh and injuries to about 40 people, including 15 security and police personnel.
