Bopanna, Shikha beaten in French Open qualifiers
New Delhi, May 26 (UNI) Rohan Bopanna's dreams of a French Open debut died an early death with the Indian losing his first round qualification match to Swiss Michael Lammer.
The Swiss player took one hour and 40 minutes to win the match 6-4, 7-6.
Bopanna served as many as 11 aces and fired 39 winners but the Davis Cupper could not rein in string of unforced errors and lost points at crucial moments to let the match slip out of his hand.
In women's singles qualifiers, US-based Shikha Uberoi lost 5-7, 2-6 to Russian Galina Voskoboeva in the second round.
Shikha put up a defiant show in the first set but her serve let her down and it took the Russian 56 minutes to win the set and go one up.
The Indian Fed Cupper looked a bit jaded in the second set and could not cover the court and the Russian won the set in 43 minutes to seal the match in her favour.
Shikha had beaten Maria Jose Argeri in the first round 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Sunitha Rao, the American player of Indian origin, also went down to Romanian Edina Gallovits 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 in the second round, according to information received here today.
