Quota: Medical services totally affected in Mysore

Mysore, May 25: Medical services at K R Hospital and Cheluvambha hospitals here were completely thrown out of gear as junior doctors, post graduate medical students and interns continued to boycott work in protest against the 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in higher education.

Patients, coming from various parts of the district, have been put to untold misery as nobody was attending to the OPD sections.

Infact, the OPD at Cheluvambha hospital had been closed due to shortage of doctors.

Services at the intensive care unit, surgery department and casualty and emergency sections were the worst hit owing to the strike. The situation in the JSS private hospital was no different either.

The anti-reservation protest by medical students entered the tenth day today, with the relay hunger strike by the medicos continuing in front of the Cheluvambha hospital. The students staged street plays in the city, creating awareness about reservation and its effect on meritorious students.

Meanwhile, Mysore Medical College Principal B C Bastrad convened an emergency meeting at the hospital with various heads of the department to discuss the matter. Doctors who had proceeded on long leave have been called back for service immediately, besides seeking the services of some doctors from district health organisations. The State Government had been informed of the situation, deteriorating day by day.

He sought the permission of the Government to serve notices on the junior doctors and post graduates boycotting hospital duties.
