Private medical services collapse in reservation protest.

Dehradun, May 25 (UNI) Private medical services totally collapsed in Uttaranchal capital Dehradun today with students of various medical institutions, doctors and representatives of various other organisations taking to the streets against the proposed reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions. The one day bandh called by the IMA saw most of the private hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, medical stores and emergency services closed.

IMA members supported by other medical associations, student bodies and social organisations took out peaceful procession from IMA House to Gandhi Park.

From there they headed to Clock Tower and burnt effigy of HRD Minister Arjun Singh. Reaching District Collectorate later, representatives of various institutions handed over charter of demands addressed to the Prime Minister to the District Magistrate.

Key demands included setting up of judicial committee to review the whole reservation policy, reservation if necessary'. be implemented for BPLs and not be based on caste or religion.

Dr Pradeep Kumar, President of IMA Dehradun branch, said the organisation was not against any caste but the criteria for reservation drawn by the government was not judicious. ''It should be based on financial conditions,'' he said, adding instead of providing reservation in higher education, the government should ensure free education to the students and make them capable for competitions in later stages.

By implimenting reservation policy the government was dividing the country on caste basis, he said. Dr D D Chaudhary, state secretary of IMA, said vote bank politics was behind the government's stubborness. ''The issue of reservation will never come to the end like this,'' he said, adding it was high time a line was drawn on this. Medical students of Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust, Uttaranchal Ayurvedic College and Forest Research Institute (Deemed University) protested with placards and black bands tied on their arms. They said the reservation system would result in brain drain.
