Nikkei falls as smelters retreat, banks down

TOKYO, May 25 (Reuters) The Nikkei average fell 0.57 percent on Thursday as shares of energy firms and smelters, such as Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd., fell after a broad sell-off in commodities and banks eroded the previous day's gains.

The Nikkei average was down 90.62 points at 15,816.58 as of 0005 GMT after rising 1.97 percent the previous day. The broader TOPIX index was down 0.7 percent at 1,594.72.
