New Speaker to be elected on June 1

Pondicherry, May 25 (UNI) The new Speaker and deputy Speaker to the territorial Assembly will be elected on June one.

According to official sources, the notification for the election was issued today with the filing of nominations starting from the same day. The nominations will close at 1200 hrs on May 31.

If necessary, election will be held on June one in the House.

Congress member R Radhakrishnan, elected from Kuruvinatham constituency for the second time, is likely to be elected unopposed as the Speaker as there is no possibility of the Opposition fielding any candidate.

The first session of the 12th Assembly had already been notified to commence at 1230 hrs on May 29, immediately after the Cabinet expansion at 0930 hours on the day. Senior member A V Sreedharan, who is likely to be nominated as the pro-tem Speaker, would administer the oath of office to the newly-elected members on May 29 and the House will be adjourned for June one for the elections.
