HC defers Zaheera's case till June 5
Mumbai, May 25 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today deferred till June five a petition filed by Advocate Umesh Deshpande on behalf of Zaheera Shaikh and her family seeking a stay on the ongoing proceedings at a Sessions court against them for giving false evidence in the Best Bakery case.
The Sessions court had suo motu initiated perjury proceedings against Zaheera and others for giving false evidence despite being the key witnesses in the Best Bakery retrial.
Advocate Deshpande also challenged the remarks passed by the Abhay Thipsay's court against Zaheera and family in the Best Bakery verdict.
The HC today directed Zaheera's lawyer to appeal to the court for hearing the petition on June five when the court opens after the summer vacation.
However, the case in the Sessions court has also been stayed till June five to hear proceedings on the stay.
A criminal revision application had been filed by Zaheera, her sister Sahira and brother Nasibullah in the high court challenging the adverse remarks against them in the judgement by the Sessions Court and also to quash the judgement as well as conviction of the nine people.
On February 24, Justice Thipsay had convicted nine people for the Best Bakery killings and acquitted eight accused. He had also held that Zaheera, her brother, sister and mother Sehrunnisa had intentionally lied in the retrial. Thus the summary trial against them had been initiated and show cause notices were served upon them.
