Four get ten-year RI for gangrape
Mumbai, May 25 (UNI) A local court today sentenced four persons to ten years' rigorous imprisonment while holding them guilty of raping a 27-year-old woman in Govandi area of Mumbai suburb last year.
Additional Sessions Judge K U Chandiwal convicted the accused under section 376 (2-g) and 506 (ii) read with 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1,500 each on them, failing which they will have to undergo an additional one month imprisonment.
Those convicted are - Mohd Hussain Aslam Qureshi (19), Abdul Gani Rashid Shaikh (25), Noor Mohd Salim Shaikh (18) and Sherali Sheru Sabirul Shaikh (25).
According to prosecution, the victim, a mother of two children, was working at a dumping place in Govandi when the four men called her to an isolated place and gang-raped her on March four, last year.
Immediately after the incident, the victim lodged a complaint with the Shivajinagar police station, after which she was admitted to a hospital for the treatment of her injuries.
Initially, police arrested one person in this case, but, a public outcry led to the arrest of the other three persons.
In all, 13 witnesses were examined.
After hearing both the parties, the court pronounced the four as guilty and announced the punishment on them.
