200 striking docs issued with suspension notices
Lucknow, May 25 (UNI) Termination-cum-suspension notices under ESMA were today served to 200 doctors of the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), who are on strike a against the reservation issue for OBCs in higher education.
The medicos have been asked to resume duties within the next 24 hours, failing which termination proceedings would commence against them.
The notices were issued by the UP government as part of the provisions of Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), imposed against the doctors' strike on Sunday.
Striking doctors' spokesperson Dr Amit Goel told UNI the resident doctors of the prestigious Institute would continue with the stir despite the notices.
Today, the doctors held a rally at Shahid Smarak in the heart of the city to protest quota proposals.
They claimed that the OBC reservation in institutions of higher learning would only create long-term problems in the medical sector.
SGPGIMS has 120 doctors and it has recalled most of the 45, who were on leave. The decision indicated its apprehensions that the strike might continue for a while.
The agitation by resident doctors has entered cyberspace with the doctors launching a weblog to garner support on the burning issue.
