State Human Rights Commission halts minor girl's marriage

Hyderabad, May 24 (UNI) A minor girl's marriage was stopped by the administration after intervention of the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission today.

The marriage of Srilata, a 15-year-old girl from Kolukunda village of Ranga Reddy was stopped by the District Collector after she appealed to the SHRC saying her father was forcing her into it despite her repeated pleas that she wanted to continue her education.

The Collector assured the girl that the government would help her in her education.

In another incident, the SHRC issued notice to the Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam city, in response to a local newspaper report about a woman detainee who was being treated in hospital chained to her bed.

The woman was among those arrested by the police during an agitation against Gangavaram port by the displaced persons. She was injured in the police lathicharge and was admitted to hospital.

She was chained to her bed during the treatment. A leading Telugu daily carried pictures and a news report on the incident, and the SHRC served notice on the Police Commissioner.
