Rebels kill four Russian troops in Chechnya

Moscow, May 24 : Four Russian soldiers were killed and three others wounded when rebels attacked a military base in Chechnya, Interfax news agency reported today.

The agency said separatist guerrillas attacked the military base late yesterday in the lawless Vedeno region in Chechnya's mountainous south.

Russian troops control most of Chechnya, where they have fought rebels for 11 years. Attacks are common and have spread to neighbouring Muslim regions of the Caucasus.

According to media monitoring by Web site voinenet.ru, clashes killed at least 35 people and injured 35 over the last week across the North Caucasus.
