Nuclear Iran, threat to Russia: Ex-Defence Minister

Moscow, May 24: Former Russian Defence Minister Marshal Igor Sergeyev today said a nuclear Iran would pose a more serious threat to Russia than to the United States.

''Russia is more interested in Iran without nuclear weapons than the US because the missiles Tehran has today are capable of reaching Russian territory,'' Marshal Sergeyev told reporters here..

''One must face the truth. Present-day threats can only be dealt with if the world's special services combine their efforts,'' he said.

However, Marshal Sergeyev, who was Defence Minister under President Boris Yeltsin, pointed out that Russia was against the use of force against Iran to resolve the situation surrounding its nuclear programme.

''Political instruments must be used to find a solution to the Iranian nuclear problem,'' he added.
