Legislative Council to be revived: Barnala
Chennai, May 24 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today announced the revival of the now-defunct State Legislative Council.
In his customary address to the House, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said the government would undertake necessary steps for the Constitutional amendment to revive the Legislative Council.
The Council was abolished in 1985 during the then MGR regime, after the Former Chief Minister made a vain bid to nominate actor 'Venniradai' Nirmala to the Council.
The revival of the Legislative Council had been the main demand of the constituents of the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance.
The Congress and the Pattal Makkal Katchi had resolved in their election manifestos to take steps for the restoration of the council.
