Leaders oppose Tipaimukh dam
Tamenglong, May 24 : A two-day leaders meet on Tipaimukh dam jointly organised by Action Commitee against Tipaimukh project, Zeliangrong Union (Assam-Manipur-Nagaland) and Committee against Tipaimukh Dam concluded here yesterday.
The meet deceided on a 14-point resolution, which said that it will oppose every attempt to 'befool' the people by promises of mega-projects.
Large number of experts spoke about the dam to be constructed by North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO) at Manipur, which aims to generate 1500 MW.
It reaffirmed that it would resist any attempt to undermine or fragment the identity of the tribals living in the area.
It asserted the 'right to free, prior and informed consent' in all developmental interventions, plans and projects, throughout the planning and implementation.
It said the project was unacceptable as there was environmental, social and seismic risks that would destroy, displace and kill thousands in the future.
It further resolved that the Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi, (MoEF) clearance will not be allowed without free, prior and informed decision.
It demanded that according to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi Notification a public hearing has to be carried out before carrying out the project.
