Congress decries BJP bid to denigrate Speaker
New Delhi, May 24: The Congress today condemned what it called an "obstructive approach" adopted by the BJP on the concluding day of the Budget Session of Parliament yesterday and said this was a measure of its frustration and complete bankruptcy of mind.
''This betrays an unhealthy trend in democracy,''Congress Spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan told reporters here.
She said the Congress expected the main BJP to function as a responsible Opposition party which would bring to the notice of the Government important issues concerning the people."During the last two years, the BJP has utterly failed to function as a contructive Opposition.
Ms Natrjan said the entire country was aware of the "increasing marginalisation" of the BJP and its irrelevance in the national political scenario."Those in the BJP and the NDA owe a responsibility to the nation to function constructively and allow Parliament to function." Ms Natrajan said the BJP obstructed the democratic process and attempted to denigrate the high post of Lok Sabha Speaker.
Their behaviour sank so low that they attacked the high Constitutional post of the Speaker."It was the lowest a party could sink and become a threat to the functioning of democracy."she said."We call upon the BJP to understand the implications of stalling Parliament and denigrating Speaker."
The Congress Spokesperson said the BJP had wasted the public money by stalling the proceedings of the House to launch an attack on the Speaker."They had thereby damaged the fabric of the Constitution which can't be set right if this trend continues."
