LS ajourned sine die amid uproarious scenes

New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) The Lok Sabha was today adjourned sine die amid protests by the Opposition over the decision to reprimand former Secretary General Subash Kashyap for ''grave misconduct'' The issue had forced Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to adjourn the House twice earlier in the day, the first time till 1200 hrs and later up to 1400 hrs after BJP members shouted slogans and trooped into the well of the House saying the government decision had been unilateral.

The Committee of Privileges, in its report, had found that the former Secretary General had committed a gross breach of privilege and contempt of the House by ''imputing motives to the Speaker in discharging his duties and casting reflections on his impartiality''.

Even as the uproar caused by the BJP members shouting ''Tanashahi nahin chalegi (dictatorship will not be allowed)'' persisted, and they stood near the well of the House, Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee read out a resolution reprimanding Mr Kashyap for the alleged misconduct and urged the members of the House to endorse it.

The Speaker put the resolution to vote and it was passed by a voice vote.

As the furore continued over the issue, the Speaker read out his customary report about what had transpired during the first half and second half of the Budget Session of the Lok Sabha which began on February 26.
