Jamiat delegation meets PM

New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure fair representation of Muslims in Parliament and state assemblies and pass a law to resolve disputes concerning regligious places.

A delegation of Jamiat led by its president Maulana Arshad Madani met Dr Singh last week and presented a six-point charter of demands including a comprehensive law against communal riots.

Drawing the Prime Minister's attention to the problems faced by the minorities, the Jamiat said places of worship of the community should be given protection so that Vadodara-like incidents could be prevented.

The delegation also urged Dr Singh to introduce the Communal Riots (Prevention and Compensation) Bill in Parliament, according to Maulana Mehmood Madani, the Jamiat General Secretary and a member of the delegation.

Other demands include reservation for Muslims in public and private sectors and educational institutions.

The Jamiat also expressed concern over the farmers' suicides across the country and demanded welfare schemes by the central and state governments.
