Cooperative bankers meet Sonia

New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) The National Cooperative Union of India and the National Federation of Urban Cooperative Banks and Credit Societies have sought the mediation of Congress President Sonia Gandhi for rollback of tax imposed on cooperative banks in Budget 2006-07.

NCUI President S S Sisodia, NAFCUB President B Vijay Kumar besides MPs P J Kurian and Alkaben Kshtriya met Ms Gandhi to highlight problems of cooperative banks arising out of the withdrawal of benefits under Section 80(P), a NCUI statement said.

The Congress chief assured the delegation that she would take up the matter with the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister, it stated.

A joint meeting of the NAFCUB and some MPs had decided last week that an all-party delegation of members of parliament will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for rollback of the tax, it added.

A one-day strike was observed in cooperative banks on May 12 against the tax levy.
