Cherno More coach can enhance status with Cup win
SOFIA, May 23: Cherno More Varna coach Yasen Petrov can enhance his reputation for achieving immediate success if the club pull off a surprise win over CSKA Sofia in tomorrow's Bulgarian Cup final.
''We do respect CSKA but we're not afraid. We know we have the potential to win,'' Petrov said.
''They have vast experience but I want to convince my players that only our play is what matters. It's important to produce our distinctive style on Wednesday.'' Petrov was named Cherno More coach in March and pulled them out of the relegation zone.
They reached their first Bulgarian Cup final with a 2-1 win in extra time at second division Shoumen, having already knocked out UEFA Cup quarter-finalists Levski Sofia 3-2.
A win against CSKA will guarantee Cherno More a place in Europe next season.
''We've already eliminated Levski and we don't have to worry about CSKA,'' said Cherno More chairman Krasen Kralev. ''To win the Cup will be something very special for the whole city of Varna.'' CSKA, who have lifted the trophy 18 times, strolled to a 4-1 win over basement league club Naftex Bourgas to reach the final.
The capital-based side are the bookmakers' favourite although winning trophy will do little to compensate for a disappointing league season.
They failed to challenge bitter city rivals Levski for the title having squandered a seven-point lead at the top of the table after the first half of the season .
Spanish referee Santiago Rodriguez will officiate the match at the national stadium Vasil Levski.
