IIT, Madras proposes to set up Research Park near campus

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has submitted a proposal to set up a research park adjacent to its campus, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development M A A Fatmi said in a written reply the government does not propose to set up IIT research park in the country. However, IIT Madras has submitted its proposal.

In another reply, he said that at present there was no proposal before the government to upgrade or expand any of the Regional Engineering Colleges to IIT level.

He said nearly 2.99 lakh aspirants appeared for IIT-JEE against 5444 seats in seven IITs, Information Technology-Banaras Hindu University and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

These institutes are autonomous in nature and could endeavour to increase the intake depending upon the infrastructure available with them, he said.
