Bhopal, May 22 : Mass marriages are becoming popular in Madhya Pradesh- thanks to the government assistance for the marriage of girls beloning to BPL families.

In a mass marriage organised by Multai block panchayat and Gayatri Pariwar in Betul district yesterday, 108 girls from BPL families got married in this manner.

The administration provides Rs 5,000 for household goods and Rs 1,000 for marriage expenses to each couple.

Similarly, 141 couples belonging to Muslim community were married in Ratlam yesterday at a function attended by about 30,000 people.

Representatives of the district administration and people's representatives attended the mass marriages, which was formally launched by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in tribal-dominated Mandla district last month. More than 100 couples were married at that function.

Through the mass marriages, child marriages are also prevented to a great extent.
