Army celebrates Teethwal day

Srinagar, May 22 (UNI) The Army today celebrated the Teethwal day to commemorate the liberation of Teethwal in Karnah area of Jammu and Kashmir on May 22, 1948.

A defence spokesman said the celebration this year spanned over two weeks in which a host of sporting and social events were organised.

Medical, veterinary and pulse polio camps, recruitment rally, harmony run, cricket and volley ball tournaments besides cultural competitions were held to mark the day, he added.

He said the ceremony, organised by Chamkot Battalions, began with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Commander of the Tangdhar Brigade and singing of the National Anthem.

The games, cultural events and the motorcycle display by the 'Tornadoes Team' enthralled the audience. Prizes and gifts were later distributed among the children.

''The day espouses strong emotions and bears testimony to the resident bond between the Army and the brave people of Tangdhar bowl. The celebration is not a mere social event, but an assertion of the people's resolve to combat such threats to our national integrity,'' the spokesman said.
