Quota: Agitating doctors asked to vacate hostel

New Delhi, May 21 : Termination notices were served today on resident doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences agitating against the proposed 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in centres of higher education.

The notices, served through the AIIMS administration, asked the residents to rejoin duty or vacate hostels within 24 hours, a spokesman for the striking doctors said.

''We are talking to the health secretary to resolve this,'' he, however, said, indicating that the issue could soon be resolved.

The notices were served soon after the doctors and medical students rejected the government's assurance that general category seats in institutes of higher education will not be reduced and, ignoring appeals from the Prime Minister, decided to continue with the indefinite stir.

Meanwhile, several activists of a ''Medicos Forum for Equal Opportunities'' participated in a demonstration at the AIIMS today supporting the reservation proposal. According to Forum spokesman Dr Vikas Bajpai a similar demonstration would be carried out tomorrow as well.

OBC/SC/ST students and political forces from many states supporting the Government's move would converge at the Talkatora Stadium here tomorrow for a pro-reservation 'Mahapanchayat'.
