Pope Bendict burnt in effigy in Varanasi
Varanasi, May 21 : The activists of Hind Swaraj Abhiyan (HSA) here today burnt Pope Bendict in effigy over his recent statement pertaining to religious conversion in India.
The activists led by Prabodhini Joshi first took out a procession raising anti-Pope slogans from the Ramkatora area.
The march that traversed through various parts of the city culminated near a Church in Maldahiya, where the HSA activists burnt in effigy the Vatican cardinal's effigy.
Later, addressing a public meeting the HSA leaders termed the recent statement of the Pope over religious conversion in India as an interference in the country's internal affairs.
They demanded the UPA government and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in particular clarify their stand on the issue.
