Fidayeen attack on Congress rally in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 21 : Two days ahead of the second round-table conference on Kashmir, ''fidayeen (suicide squad)'' struck at a Congress rally here to mark the 15th death anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, official sources said.

They said 'fidayeen' opened fire and also hurled grenades at the public meeting held at Sher-i-Kashmir Park here.

The meeting was expected to be attended by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, state Congress President Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed and other top party leaders.

Loud explosions and gun shots were heard in the entire Civil Lines area at 1315 hrs this afternoon. The gunfight was on when reports last came in. The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Youth Congress had also organised a rally at the same venue.

All India Youth Congress President Ashok Tanwar was scheduled to address the meeting.
