Medicos,engineering studentsn take out anti-quota rally

Bangalore, May 20 (UNI) Amidst heavy police security, rallies, picketing and protests were organised by junior doctors, medical students and engineering college students in Bangalore and other parts of Karnataka Union government's proposal to reserve 27 per cent restervation in higher educational insitutions to OBCs.

protests in favour of reservation were also held in the city.

The anti reservation protesters raised slogans against Human Resources Minister Arjun Singh and burnt his effigy in some places.

They vowed to continue the agitation till the government withdrew the proposal.

However, no untoward incidents were reported from anywhere in the state as the demonstrations remained peaceful, police officials said.

In the city, the protesters under the umbrella of 'Youth for Equality' and 'Save Brand India' took out a rally from Chikka Lal Bagh to Banappa park where a big rally was held. Addressing the rally, student leaders called for a continued the fight against 'system' which was trying to 'impose' decisions which were unilateral and lacked support from general public.

The pro-reservation protesters belonging 'Yuvajana Jagruti Vedike' took out a rally from Basaveshwara Circle and submitted a memorandum to the governor T N Chaturvedi urging implementation of 93th schedule of the constitution.

Apart from the city demonstrations was organised Mysore, Hubli, Belgaum, Gulbarga and Mangalore.

In Mysore, junior doctors stayed away from duty at government K R Hospital, while medical students boycotted classes in their support.

Students from private JSS medical and dental college also extended suport.

In Gulbarga, the protesters took out a rally from M R Medical college that culminated at Deputy Commissioer's office where the submitted a memorandum.

In Hubli, junior doctors and medical students held a dharna in front of Karnataka Iinstitute of Medical Sciences.
