UP, Delhi advance into quarterfinals
Bangalore, May 18: Uttar Pradesh blanked Bombay 5-0 to storm into the quarterfinals of the 18th Sub-Junior National Women's Hockey Championship being played at the KSHA stadium here today.
UP girls virtually toyed with their opponents to top Pool F which was reduced to two teams due to the absence of Bihar. Naomi Monteiro struck three goals for UP, while Firdosbanu Ansari and Visakha Dodke accounted for the other two.
In pool E, Delhi also made it to the last eight by virtue of their runaway win against West Bengal yesterday. This pool too was reduced to two teams as Bhopal failed to turn up.
In the other matches played today, PSPSU, after holding Tamil Nadu in their first match yesterday, kept their chances alive to qualify for the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Uttaranchal in pool A.
While Orissa began their campaign in style drubbing Andhra Pradesh 7-0 in pool B, Maharashtra edged past Punjab 1-0 in Pool C and Manipur crushed Assam 6-0 in Pool D.
For PEPSU Simerjit Kaur, Mamta and Amritpal Kaur scored one goal each, while Divya Rana reduced the margin for Uttaranchal.
Orissa skipper Binita Xess was at her best scoring three goals while Roselin Dung Dung and Binita Kindo found the mark twice each.
Star forward Manjari Pandey scored three goals for Uttar Pradesh, while Deepika Sharma and Rashmi Singh scored the other goals. For Maharashtra, Melanie Soares scored the lone goal of the match.
