State to observe Peace Day in grand manner

Aizwal, May 18 (UNI) The state government has chalked out a programme for the observaance of the 20th anniversary of the signing of a memorendum of understanding between the Centre and the Mizo National front in Delhi on June 30, 1986.

Talking to the newspersons here today, Chief Secretary Haukhum Hauzel gave the media a brief outline of the programme that had been worked out while seeking suggestions from them.

''Twenty years down the line now, the state government felt that these sustained peace was something that can be boasted as a result of which, unlike other years, the observance of the day has been chalked out with care to included as much people's participation as possible,'' he said.

The programme has included offering of prayer of thanks by all leaders of the different church denominations in the state in a function to be held at Vanapa Hall here.

A song writing competition and an essay writing competion on the theme of national integration are also on the agenda while a seminar will also be hold before the actual anniversary day.

Volleyball competions will also be held under the aegies of the state and youth affairs department.

Convicts serving their time may also get their sentences cut short, the chief secretary said adding home department is looking into the possibilities of commuting sentences in connection with the peace accord day.

Media persons also suggested a ''peace run'', which could be organised early in the morning of June 30.

The day will also be observed in all district headquarters in the state.
