OBC associations threaten counter stir in Goa

Panaji, May 18 (UNI) Backward Classes associations have threatened to launch a counter agitation if the doctors and other professionals across the country continued to engage in anti-quota stir.

Gomant Bhandari Samaj (GBS) president Murari Chopedkar and Akhil Goa Maratha Kharvi Samaj (AMKS) president Chandrakant Chodankar told reporters last evening that they fully supported Union Minister of Human Resource Arjun Singh's move to enact a legislation to increase quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in professional colleges.

''The objective of the doctors'agitation is to oppose the reservations for OBCs and this we will not tolerate,'' they said.

The associations planned to mobilise support for quota by holding ''awareness campaigns''.

Meanwhile, resident doctors, interns and students of the Goa Medical College and Hospital here observed a one-day token strike yesterday to protest the lathi-charge on their counterparts in Mumbai.
