Medicos agitation intensifies in Surat as junior doctors join strike

Surat, May 18 (UNI) Medical students' agitation against the proposed reservation in higher education sector today got a shot in the arm after Junior Doctors Association also joined the strike here.

According to Medical Superintendent of Government Medical College Hospital, M K Wadel, 146 junior doctors have joined the students' strike since last evening.

''We have made the necessary arrangements so that the junior doctors' strike does not affect the functioning of the hospital by anyway. We have asked 40 tutors in the college to perform duties,'' said Mr Wadel.

He also added that around 1,300 patients attended out patient section today morning and functions of the emergency wards also were normal.

Medical superintandent of Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) Kalpanaben Desai also informed that the condition of the hospital was normal today.

''We do not have any junior doctors here and therefore the strike has not affected the functioning of the hospital anyway,'' Ms Desai said.

Meanwhile, the students of both colleges continued their agitation through rallies and symbolic protests against reservation.

''We will organise a candle march today evening in the city in which hundreds of medical students will participate,'' said one of the student leaders.
