BSP, best steel plant for seventh time

Kolkata, May 18 (UNI) Bhilai Steel Plant(BSP) of the Steel Authority of India has been adjudged the best performing steel plant in the country for 2004-05.

The Prime Minister's trophy for the best steel plant in the coiuntry will be presdented by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a function to be held in Visakhapatnam on May 20. Besides the trophy, the award includes a citation and a cheque of Rs one crore, a BSP release today said.

With this honour, BSP will have the distinction of becoming the only steel plant in the country to have been given this prestigious trophy seven times out of a total 13 times.

The plant had been selected for the award for its excellence in production, techno-economics, R and D efforts and product development, human resource management and environment management among other things.

BSP became the first steel plant in the country to surpass the five million-ton mark in hot metal production and in crude steel production in 2005-06. The plant had provided the 260 million-long rails to the Indian Railways and special steel plates for manufacture of aircraft carriers for the Indian Navy.

BSP also developed and supplied corrosion-resistant rails to Railways for coastal areas and plates for manufacturing water pipelines for Godavari and Krishna water projecrts in Andhra Pradesh. UNI KDG SJC KLC1807
