BJP finally confirms VP Marandi's resignation

New Delhi, May 18: After maintaning a stoic silence over the resignation of its vice president Babulal Marandi from the party and Lok Sabha membership, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the first time today formally confirmed that it had received his resignation letter.

''Yes, we have received it,'' BJP Parliamentary Party Spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra merely said avoiding any further comments. For the last 48 hours, the party had been maintaining that no such letter was received by the party.

Asked if the new development rings an alarm bell for the Jharkhand coalition which is having a thin margin in the evenly placed Assembly, Mr Malhotra said he had read media reports quoting Mr Marandi that he would not upset the state government.

Mr Marandi, the former Jharkhand Chief Minister and the lone BJP Lok Sabha MP from the state had sent his resignation from the primary membership of the BJP and his Koderma seat, irked at the way the Arjun Munda government was running.

While the BJP kept denying about receiving the resignation letter, the world came to know of it through the Speaker's Office.

He had also blamed the national leadership for encouraging corrupt elements for selfish reasons in the tribals dominated state.
