BJP demands probe into wheat import deal
New Delhi, May 18 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party today questioned the Government's decision to import wheat and sought a probe into it.
The wheat import order should be cancelled and the ''highest level probe'' ordered into the deal, party chief Rajnath Singh was quoted as having said while addressing a dharna organised by the BJP Kisan Morcha here.
According to a party release, he said that as against a total estimated yield of 715 lakh tonnes of wheat, national demand is expected to be 720 lakh tonnes.
''I wonder why the import order has been issued when the deficit is merely 5 lakh tonnes,'' he said, accusing the Government of going against farmers' interestS.
Demanding that no order be placed with Australian wheat exporter AWB Ltd, which he claimed was named in the Volcker report, Mr Singh pointed out that the Government was willing to pay Rs 900-950 for imported wheat as against the MSP of only Rs 650 for farmers here.
